Eid Holiday Traffic Accidents Down 12% from Last Year, Police Chief Says

2 days ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo reported a decline in traffic accidents following the 1446 Hijri Eid al-Fitr or the 2025 Eid holiday, compared to the same period last year.

This reduction is believed to result from the implementation of both local and national one-way traffic systems by the Indonesian National Police’s Traffic Corps to manage the high volume of vehicles during the return flow.

"Thanks to the hard work of all colleagues with various alternatives and engineering, the number of people experiencing accidents has also decreased, by 12 percent on toll roads and 88 percent in terms of fatalities," said General Listyo Sigit in Cikampek on Sunday, January 6, 2025, as cited in a written statement.

Despite the decline, he reminded the public to stay vigilant, drive responsibly, and follow on-site officers' directions to ensure a safe return journey.

He also expressed hope that the positive trend would continue through the end of the return flow period, enabling a safe and comfortable homecoming experience for all.

Citing data from Jasa Marga, General Listyo noted that 52 percent of return flow vehicles had already arrived in Jakarta.

With half of the vehicles having entered the capital, he concluded that traffic movement during the return period was proceeding smoothly overall.

To support traffic management, Traffic Corps officially launched a national one-way traffic system on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The system spans from KM 414 Kalikangkung Toll Gate in Central Java to KM 70 Cikampek Utama Toll Gate in West Java.

The initiative was ceremonially inaugurated by General Listyo Sigit Prabowo alongside Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi in Kalikangkung. Also in attendance were Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, Head of Traffic Corps, along with several other relevant officials.

Before the national scheme was implemented, the Traffic Corps had already introduced local one-way traffic measures, starting from KM 188 Palimanan Toll to KM 70 Cikatama Toll. The route was later extended to KM 219 Pejagan-Pemalang Toll.

As traffic volume from the eastern region grew, the one-way system was further expanded to reach Kalikangkung.

"The flow from West Java and DKI Jakarta towards West Java can still move because we have prepared the lanes," Listyo stated, assuring that traffic from both directions could continue smoothly thanks to the engineering measures in place.

The event was also attended by Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Chief of the Polri Security Department Commissioner General Fadil Imran, Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi, President Director of PT Jasa Raharja Rivan A. Purwantono, President Director of Jasa Marga Subakti Syukur, and other key stakeholders.
