TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Teluk Intan, located in Perak, Malaysia. This lesser-known destination offers natural beauty and interesting historical landmarks to visit. Start with a culinary adventure, then cruise down the river by boat, to exploring the sunflower garden.

Teluk Intan, formerly known as Teluk Anson during the British protectorate era. The town has well-preserved colonial architecture and Chinese shophouses that reflect its past. Located along the Perak River, it became a major center of trade and cultural exchange, which significantly influenced the local cuisine and diverse cultures. In addition, the many temples and stunning landmarks are also a special attraction for this area.

Tourist attractions in Teluk Intan

1. Climb the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan

If in Italy there is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, in Teluk Intan there is also a Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan (Menara Condong). This three-story clock tower with a water tank resembles an eight-story building. Built to stand upright, but the weight of the water tank makes it look tilted and becomes a characteristic. This is one of the most popular places to visit in Teluk Intan, and visitors can go up to the second floor to enjoy beautiful views of the city.

2. River Cruise

For a scenic view, take a cruise on the Perak River from the River Front Teluk Intan. There are short and long cruises, and you can choose from a number of speedboats and several paddle boats to start your journey. There are also seating areas and nature trails to enjoy along the riverbank.

3. Go on a culinary tour

In Teluk Intan, tourists can enjoy a variety of cuisines, including traditional Malay, Chinese, Indian, Western and more. The local cuisine is heavily influenced by Indian and Chinese flavours, featuring refreshing ingredients and unique twists inspired by authentic Malay dishes. Some of the favourite places to indulge in these delicious treats include Jalan Woo Saik Hong Market, Jalan Maharani, Pasar Pekan Baru Market and Pasar Selasa.

Some must-try culinary delights in Teluk Intan include Mee Rebus, Apam Balik, freshly made Chee Cheong Fun, curry noodles, fruit rojak and Nasi Lemak. It is also worth visiting one of the city’s Chinese bakeries to find delicious treats like Heong Peah and butterfly cakes, which are crispy and gooey with every bite. In addition, durian lovers will be spoiled, because the city is famous for Musang King durian.

3. See fireflies

For nature lovers, a tour to the mangrove forest is a must, where the twinkling fireflies are abundant. A river cruise that is almost pitch black and completely silent at dusk is the best way to get close to these fascinating creatures. This could be one attraction that is a shame to miss if traveling with children.

4. Spend time at the Sunflower Garden

The Sunflower Garden is home to more than 2,000 sunflowers of various sizes in an area of 0.8 hectares. These brilliant flowers grow all year round, thanks to strategic planting. Although the park is far from the city, you can reach it in an hour to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Best time and how to visit Teluk Intan

As reported by Travel and Leisure Asia, the best time to visit Teluk Intan is from December to February, when the weather is dry and pleasant. This is the peak tourist season for the west coast of Malaysia, so there will be crowds and prices will be higher. Visit here from March to May or June to August to avoid the crowds, enjoy the nice beach weather, and experience little rain, but be prepared for the peak summer heat.

To get to Teluk Intan, you can take a flight to Sultan Azlan Shah Airport or Ipoh Airport which is around 81 kilometers away. Another alternative is by train via Ipoh Train Station which is about 105 kilometers away. Additionally there are various private and government buses connecting Teluk Intan Bus Station to other parts of the country, including Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
