BEM SI to Rally in Jakarta, Urging Indonesia's Withdrawal from Board of Peace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The All-Indonesia Student Executive Body (BEM SI) is urging the Indonesian government to withdraw from its membership in the Board of Peace (BoP). This demand was conveyed in a statement titled "Ramadan Against: Support the Revolutionary Struggle of the Palestinian and Middle Eastern People," released prior to the student rally at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

In the statement, BEM SI assessed that Indonesia's membership in the Board of Peace is contrary to the principle of free and active foreign policy and has the potential to weaken Indonesia's commitment to the struggle for Palestinian independence.

"BEM Seluruh Indonesia, representing all elements without distinction, is a manifestation of the students' discontent with symbolic diplomacy that does not produce concrete results for the independence of Palestine," wrote the Political and Democracy Issue Coordinator, as well as the Coordinator for Law, Human Rights, and Corruption at BEM SI.

The student alliance also criticized the government's diplomacy, which they deemed to be predominantly symbolic and had not yet resulted in concrete steps to stop the violence in the Middle East region. According to them, the worsening humanitarian situation demands a firmer stance from the government.

BEM SI strongly condemned the Zionist regime and urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN) to take concrete action by imposing economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and effective humanitarian intervention to stop the bloodshed. They also hoped that this would help restore national sovereignty.

Furthermore, BEM SI demanded that the Indonesian government use its position as the President of the UN Human Rights Council to take decisive action against any humanitarian violations committed by Israel and the United States. They stated, "There should be no double standard, in the interest of upholding international law and providing absolute protection for civilians."

The students also reminded the government not to neglect domestic issues in foreign policy. They requested the government to ensure the continuity of energy supply and national economic stability to prevent the people from bearing the impacts of global geopolitical dynamics.

As a form of political pressure, BEM SI invited the public to participate in the protest to be held at the National Monument (Monas) area in Central Jakarta on Saturday, March 7. Each participant is expected to arrive at Monas by 14:30. According to them, the rally is part of the students' efforts to voice solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people and demand a firmer foreign policy stance from the Indonesian government.
