TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia is reinforcing efforts to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate amid increasing uncertainty in the global financial markets. The central bank has taken several measures.
"The appreciation of the dollar is occurring relative to almost all world currencies," said Deputy Director of the Department of Economic and Monetary Policy at Bank Indonesia, Juli Budi Winantya, in a discussion with the media in Bandung on Friday, April 24, 2026.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 09:50 AM local time, the rupiah briefly touched the level of 17,307 per U.S. dollar. As of this Friday afternoon, the rupiah is at the level of Rp17,229, strengthening by 57 points from Thursday's closing rate of Rp17,286.
According to Juli, the strengthening of the dollar is due to the rapid outflow of capital to the United States. This is the result of increasing U.S. Treasury yields due to the U.S.'s widening fiscal deficit.
The country's fiscal deficit is growing because they are spending more on the war. Based on estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the cost of the Iran war is estimated to have exceeded US$20 billion.
According to Juli, Bank Indonesia continues to implement policies to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate. The BI Rate remains at 4.75 percent to support efforts to safeguard the stability of the rupiah exchange rate.
Intervention measures are also continuously conducted, including Non-Deliverable Forward (NDF) transactions in foreign markets, as well as spot transactions and Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) in the domestic market. BI is also expanding its foreign exchange monetary operations through swap transactions.
"It is expected to alleviate pressure on the rupiah," said Juli.
