TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The world is a vast and varied landscape, presenting unique features at every corner. It is therefore common for individuals experiencing burnout to seek adventurous escapes from their mundane lives. While some may opt for relaxing holidays in idyllic havens with stunning seascapes and luxurious respite, others are drawn to more extreme experiences. Despite murky warnings, numerous risk-takers take the bait to explore some of the deadliest places on Earth.
List of Deadliest Places on Earth
LastMinute and Travel Triangle notified tourists about Brazil’s Snake Island and Russia’s Oymyakon as two of the deadliest places on Earth. Other perilous destinations to be aware of are as follows.
1. Snake Island, Brazil
While Brazil is a trendy holiday spot worldwide for its vibrant culture, Snake Island should be excluded from any itinerary. Also known as Ilha de Queimada Grande, this deadly island is located 25 miles off the coast of São Paulo.
It is not only considered hazardous by local lore but is also officially designated as such by the Brazilian government due to the alarming number of snakes inhabiting the area. Furthermore, Snake Island is the exclusive habitat of the elusive Golden Lancehead Viper, a serpent so venomous that its bite can reportedly melt human flesh rapidly.
2. Oymyakon, Russia
Harsh weather is a common travel deterrent, but Oymyakon's extreme conditions surpass the limits of human endurance. The average temperature plummets to -40 °C, and on some days it can drop even further to -71.2 °C. These frigid temperatures make survival virtually impossible. Adding to the challenge, very few crops are able to grow in Oymyakon, making survival feel like a fever dream.
3. Death Valley, California
Death Valley in California has earned its foreboding reputation as one of the deadliest places on Earth due to its exceptionally erratic and extreme weather. In terms of temperature, this desert valley is on par with only a few deserts in the Middle East and Africa, reaching an oppressive 56.7 °C during the summer months. Tragically, there have been several life-threatening incidents in Death Valley, including fatalities and cases of lost travelers.
4. Lake Natron, Tanzania
While pink beaches are often considered highly desirable travel destinations, the red-hued Lake Natron is a stark and dangerous exception. With a dangerously high pH level ranging from 9 to 10.5, the water of this Tanzanian basin poses a significant threat to human and animal life. Interestingly, despite being corrosive to human skin and eyes, rare species of Lesser Flamingos and cyanobacteria call Lake Natron home.
5. Skeleton Coast, Namibia
Witnessing the gruesome sight of skeletal remains of various animals, including whales, turtles, seals, elephants, and many more, is just one aspect of the grim reality of the Skeleton Coast. Beyond this ghastly spectacle, numerous other threats exist in this region. From the harsh natural conditions of extreme weather and the risk of food scarcity to the potential for gang violence, the Skeleton Coast is far from a typical leisure travel destination.
6. Danakil Desert, East Africa
The Danakil Desert is considered one of the deadliest places on Earth, primarily due to its dangerously high temperatures, which regularly exceed 50 °C. The pervasive and poisonous vapors of sulfur emanating from its numerous volcanoes and geysers are the root of this peril. In addition to these natural hazards, violent conflicts in neighboring Eritrea have reportedly erupted multiple times in the past. Consequently, travel activities in the Danakil Desert are largely prohibited.
7. North Sentinel Island, India
Boasting a postcard-like picturesque landscape of stunning beaches and abundant natural beauty, North Sentinel Island is unfortunately a deadly place to visit. Conversely, this tropical haven is home to one of the most reclusive and unwelcoming tribal communities, making it an inaccessible travel destination. Adding to the danger, it is quite common for the local inhabitants to respond with aggression when outsiders attempt to set foot on their territory.
Although these deadliest places on Earth possess an undeniable fascination, they harbor such extreme dangers that they remain off-limits to most travelers worldwide. From extremely cold destinations to poisonous substances and hostile inhabitants, these destinations are not to be approached lightly.
