TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, reported that there were still 50,374 umrah pilgrims from Indonesia in Saudi Arabia as of March 11, 2026. Of that number, 14,115 umrah pilgrims have been unable to return home due to the conflict in the Middle East.
"Those possibly detained amount to 14,115, with the number of umrah pilgrimage organizers reaching 1,239 people," he said during a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission VIII at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Irfan urged umrah pilgrims and personnel who have not yet departed for the Holy Land to temporarily postpone their departure. He stated that the journey to Saudi Arabia for the umrah pilgrimage should only be undertaken when the situation in the area is favorable.
"Our consideration is to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims," he said.
However, he noted that, as of March 9, umrah pilgrims were still departing via direct flights. According to Irfan, there are between 2,000 and 3,000 Umrah pilgrims per day.
Irfan reminded umrah travel organizers to provide guarantees for the pilgrims they send. Specifically, guarantees the safety and security of the pilgrims from the moment they depart until they return to Indonesia.
"Umrah travel organizers are also obligated to provide education to the pilgrims regarding the current conditions in the Middle East region," Irfan said.
On the other hand, he revealed that several transit countries prohibit prospective umrah pilgrims from departing for Saudi Arabia. This has the potential to cause prospective umrah pilgrims to cancel their departure.
"We will communicate compensation, restitution, or the return of visas, accommodation, consumption, and ground transportation for prospective umrah pilgrims who fail to depart," he said.
