TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - YouTube will begin using AI technology to estimate users' ages and identify accounts belonging to individuals under 18 years old. The company will implement this policy gradually, beginning in the United States on August 13, 2025.
This step allows YouTube to detect accounts owned by underage children based on the age of the account and user activity patterns. The system will then automatically enforce various restrictions, including blocking age-restricted videos, displaying non-personalized ads, "take a break" notifications, as well as restricting sensitive video recommendations such as body image issues. YouTube will also activate automatic privacy reminders when users upload videos or write comments.
Google previously announced plans to utilize machine learning to estimate age as part of its global efforts to enhance child safety on the internet. Several countries, including the United Kingdom, have begun implementing online age verification rules, while some states in the U.S. have imposed restrictions on children's access to pornography sites. The European Union is also testing an age verification system that will be linked to digital identities.
YouTube will send notifications to users who are identified as being under 18 years old. However, if there are errors, users can verify their age by uploading a government-issued ID, taking a selfie, or entering credit card information. YouTube also warned that some creators may see changes in their audience composition to the teenage category, which may impact ad revenue, as personalized ads will not be displayed to underage users.
"Over the next few weeks, we’ll begin to roll out machine learning to a small set of users in the US to estimate their age, so that teens are treated as teens and adults as adults," wrote James Beser, Director of Product Management at YouTube, in a written statement quoted from The Verge, July 30, 2025. He also mentioned that YouTube will closely monitor this update before implementing it globally.
