TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The shooting that took place while US President Donald Trump was attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel occurred at the same venue where an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan happened 45 years earlier.
On March 29, 1981, John Hinckley Jr. fired six shots at Reagan outside the same hotel.
One of the bullets ricocheted off the presidential limousine and struck Reagan in the lung, causing significant blood loss.
Although critically ill, Reagan recovered after undergoing surgery at George Washington University Hospital and was released after 12 days.
The site of the shooting has a dark history for the United States presidency.
Forty-five years later, Trump had to be evacuated after shots rang out at the hotel.
The incident sparked panic inside the building as the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was underway on Saturday evening (April 25th local time).
Security officers moved quickly to secure President Trump and escort him from the scene.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was apprehended after officers fired shots, wounding the suspect.
Until now, the police are still investigating the perpetrator's motives in the incident.
