TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thailand U-23 national team secured third place in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup after defeating the Philippines 3-1 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Thailand earned the win with goals from Phanthamit Praphanth, Siraphop Wandee, and Seksan Ratree, while the Philippines reduced the deficit through a header by Otu Abang Banatao.
Statistically, Thailand was the more dominant side. The War Elephants registered 17 shots, nine of which were on target, while the Philippines held 54 percent of the ball possession.
The Philippines started the match on the front foot and made several attempts to score, but failed to pose a serious threat to Thailand’s goal. Thailand then shifted the momentum and created a promising chance through a shot by Chinavat Prachuabmon, which narrowly missed the target.
Thailand broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Phanthamit Praphanth converted a pass from Sittha Boonlha, giving them a 1-0 lead. Thailand continued to pressure the Philippine defense for the rest of the first half, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of head coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul’s team at halftime.
In the second half, the Philippines again took the initiative and nearly scored with a shot from Jian Vinz Solomon Caraig, but Thailand’s defense held firm. Despite early pressure, Thailand extended their lead in the 74th minute when Siraphop Wandee found the net after receiving a pass from Yotsakon Burapha, making it 2-0.
The Philippines responded four minutes later. Banatao scored with a header off a cross from Gavin Muens, narrowing the score to 2-1. He had another chance to equalize, but his shot hit the post.
Thailand sealed the victory with a third goal from Seksan Ratree, whose shot found the back of the net to make it 3-1. Thailand continued to press until the final whistle, holding the scoreline and claiming third place in the tournament.
