TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand and Kamboja are scheduled to hold ceasefire talks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today, Monday, July 28, at 03.00 p.m. local time, amid the growing intensity of border conflict between the two neighbors. According to Al Jazeera, the meeting will be led by Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The Malaysian government, currently the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has offered to mediate. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told local media that the primary focus of the meeting is to ensure an immediate ceasefire.
Mediation Involving U.S. and China
As reported by CNA, this effort has also received support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he had spoken with leaders of both countries on Saturday evening. “I spoke to both of the prime ministers, and I think by the time I got off [the phone], I think they want to settle now,” said Trump while in Scotland meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Turnberry.
Trump also warned that the trade deal between the U.S. and Thailand and Cambodia would be suspended if the violence continues. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, "We want this conflict to end as soon as possible," he said on late Sunday in the U.S.
Rubio added that officials from the U.S. Department of State were in Malaysia to assist the peace process. China is also reportedly sending a delegation to the meeting.
Clashes Have Yet to Cease
Despite the commitment to peace talks, both countries continue to make new accusations of artillery attacks that occurred prior to the meeting. According to the Thai military, as of last Sunday, the battle was still ongoing at seven points along the mountainous, dense forest and farmland-dominated border area.
“The situation remains highly tense, and it is anticipated that Cambodia may be preparing for a major military operation prior to entering negotiations,” said a statement from the Thai military. On the other hand, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense accused Thailand of violating its territory.
“This is the fifth day that Thailand has invaded Cambodia’s territory with heavy weapons and with the deployment of a lot of troops to grab Cambodia’s land,” said spokesperson Maly Socheata. The Thai military had also accused Cambodian snipers of hiding in a disputed temple and attacking Thai territory with rockets.
Four days since the military clashes broke out, the death toll has reached 35 people from both sides. According to authorities from Thailand and Cambodia, over 200,000 people have been evacuated from the border areas due to the escalating conflict.
