TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie said the role of a teacher is irreplaceable by advanced technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The researcher at the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence admitted that there are indeed some tasks in the education sector that can be delegated to AI. But this excludes the role and responsibilities of teachers as educators.

"If teachers are replaced by AI, what would happen to the quality of education?" said Stella during the AI for Indonesia event at Djakarta Theatre, Central Jakarta, Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Therefore, she agrees with the plan of the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, to enforce all ministries and agencies to publish guidelines for the use of AI in their respective sectors.

According to her, AI is merely a tool that appears advanced and uncontrollable because it has just emerged. AI, she said, will seem ordinary within one or five years in the future.

Stella then compared the difficulty, concerns, and excitement of humans adapting to AI to how humans also struggled when first introduced to tools like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

"I guarantee that in 5 or 10 years, AI will evolve and become easier," she said, adding that there's no need to worry about its existence

Stella even said that AI is not something that everyone must master. Artificial intelligence is only necessary to learn for those whose jobs are threatened by technological advancements.

"So, if we want to provide training, the ones who need it the most are the employees whose jobs are currently at risk," she said.

At the same event, Meutya Hafid said all ministries and agencies must have guidelines for the use of AI in their respective sectors. These guidelines must be derived from the AI usage guidelines that will be issued by the Ministry of Communication and Digital in 2026.

"Next year, each ministry will issue regulations related to AI in their respective sectors, to protect their sectors or ecosystems within said sectors," said Meutya in Jakarta, October 22, 2025.

Meutya also requested that ministries and agencies refrain from using AI in their environment before having these regulations. "We do not recommend the use of AI without these regulations being issued by the relevant ministries," she said.
