TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rice fields in Japan transform into rice paddy art or Tanbo Art at certain times each year. This summer, the fields in Iwate Prefecture have attracted attention as they are designed to form a giant image of Major League Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani.
The paddy field's surface can form the image of Shohei Ohtani because various rice varieties are planted in the right positions to create a large and colorful mural, according to a report by Sora News24.
This artistic image is located in the Esashi District of Oshu City. The district began hosting rice field installations in 2009 to promote agriculture and tourism. This giant paddy field art is a tribute to the Los Angeles Dodgers' Star in Mizusawa, a city that is now part of Oshu, where he was born.
Creating Paddy Field Art
The rice paddy art is created by driving stakes into the fields to determine the outer lines before planting colorful rice seedlings inside. Everything is done manually. It takes months to see the results, and it is not certain whether the art will succeed or fail until the rice grows. The artists or farmers require specific techniques to consider the diagonal perspective from the observation point.
This artwork stretches 100 meters long and changes as the rice matures, revealing deeper contrasts in color. The peak viewing season runs from now until mid-August, and in September, the entire field turns brown, with the rice harvest taking place at the end of October. The paddy field art exhibition season ends then. If you are curious, visitors will have to wait for the next season, but the image may not be the same.
Popular Locations to See Tanbo Art
Not only in Iwate Prefecture, you can enjoy Tanbo Art in Aomori. The Tanbo Art event in Inakadate, Aomori, is one of the most sought-after places for tourists to see fields decorated with unique images every year.
In Inakadate, there are two observatories to view Tanbo Art, namely the Inakadate Village Observatory and Yayoi no Sato Observatory. Both are located in different places and offer different views of the paddy field art. Both places have different operating dates. The Inakadate Village Observatory will operate from May 29 to October 9 (closed on October 1), and the Yayoi no Sato Observatory will operate from June 10 to October 9. The entrance fee for both places is 300 yen for adults, 100 yen for elementary school children, according to Japan Travel. Preschool children are free.
