TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of South Africa, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, praised Indonesia’s historical role in supporting South Africa’s fight against apartheid, noting that the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung inspired the struggle against racial discrimination.

“For all these years, the people of South African found a steadfast in Indonesia, which consistently supported the struggle against apartheid. We will forever remain grateful for the support and solidarity of the people of Indonesia,” Ramaphosa said during a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

Ramaphosa also highlighted opportunities for economic collaboration through the BRICS forum, urging Indonesia to continue its active efforts in establishing partnerships with BRICS countries.

He said such cooperation could serve as a catalyst for growth in bilateral economic relations.

“The BRICS economic partnership also provides a great potential to support development and transformation in our countries, and we encourage the deepening of Indonesia’s participation in all BRICS structures, particularly in economic collaboration,” he said.

The South African president emphasized that cooperation between the two nations is rooted in shared goals, particularly in addressing social challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and inequality.

He encouraged greater participation of marginalized communities in economic activities to enable them to play a more significant role in development.

“And by participation, I mean in a big way in which they can participate,” Ramaphosa said.

The bilateral meeting took place in a working lunch format with delegations from both countries at the Merdeka Palace.

During the discussions, Prabowo and Ramaphosa stressed the importance of enhancing economic ties and strengthening the influence of countries in the Global South.
