Shell to Exit Indonesian Gas Station Business, Assures Operations Unaffected

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The multinational petrochemical giant, Shell, confirmed that it will continue its operations in Indonesia despite having sold its entire network of gas stations to another company. Shell officially transferred about 200 gas stations in Indonesia, including 160 company-owned units, to a joint venture between Citadel Pacific Limited and Sefas Group Indonesia.

Vice President of Corporate Relations of Shell Indonesia, Susi Hutapea, said that Shell gas stations will operate as normal during the transition process.

"Shell's gas station operational activities will continue as usual until the ownership transfer process is completed," said Susi in a written statement on Friday, May 23, adding that the transfer process is expected to complete by next year.

Shell will also continue to supply fuel to partners and customers through brand licensing agreements, despite no longer managing gas stations. Additionally, Shell's lubricant business remains intact regardless of the sale.

Susi said that Shell will continue to operate a lubricant plant with a capacity of 300 million liters per year and build a grease production facility in Marunda, North Jakarta, with a capacity of 2,000 tons per year. In addition, Shell's fuel terminal in Gresik, East Java, will resume operation.

Shell's gas station sale is said to be aligned with the company's global strategy to simplify its downstream business portfolio and refocus its direction. "We remain committed to running operations that are safe, reliable, and customer-oriented," said Susi.

Citadel Pacific holds the Shell brand license in several Asia-Pacific regions, such as Guam, Palau, and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Sefas Group has long been a partner of Shell and is currently the largest distributor of Shell lubricants in Indonesia.
