President Claudia Sheinbaum Rejects Trump's Plan to Send US Troops to Mexico

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump threatened plan to send troops to Mexico faces failure. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly rejected Trump's desire. Trump initially wanted to send US troops to Mexico to help combat drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum said on Saturday, May 3, 2025, that Trump had asked her over a phone call. Trump said he wanted to help combat organized crime and suggested the deployment of US forces to Mexico.

However, Claudia Sheinbaum said she rejected the offer. "We will never accept the presence of US troops in our territory," said Sheinbaum.

"I told him, No, President Trump, our territory cannot be interfered with, our sovereignty cannot be interfered with, our sovereignty is not for sale," Sheinbaum said.

Her comments came a day after the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump pressured Mexico to allow the involvement of US military in the war against drug cartels. Quoting an anonymous source familiar with the matter, the news outlet said tensions escalated during a telephone call on April 16, 2025, between the two leaders. Trump urged Sheinbaum to allow the US military to take a leading role in combating Mexico's drug gangs that produce and smuggle fentanyl into the US.

Since taking office in January, Trump has repeatedly attacked Mexico and other US neighbors, Canada, over drug trafficking. He accused both countries of allowing illegal drugs, especially fentanyl, to flow across their borders into the US. The Trump administration also threatened to impose high tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods due to the flow of fentanyl into the US.

On Saturday, Sheinbaum said in the conversation with Trump, she had offered to cooperate with the US. She also wanted to share more extensive information.

At the same time, Sheinbaum said she had urged Trump to stop cross-border arms trafficking, which has caused a wave of violence that has killed more than 450,000 people in Mexico for nearly two decades.

Shortly after being sworn in as US president in January, Trump sent thousands of troops to the Mexican border to prevent migration waves. During his first term, Trump ordered 5,200 troops to help secure the border with Mexico.
