Prabowo Meets King Charles III, Discusses Elephant Conservation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with King Charles III of England at Lancaster House, London, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. With King Charles, Prabowo discussed elephant conservation efforts in Sumatra.

The meeting took place on Wednesday morning local time. Prabowo arrived first at Lancaster House before meeting the King in the State Dining Room. The two then held a brief meeting before attending the main series of events at the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Philanthropy Meeting.

During the main event, the two leaders received a brief explanation of the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Philanthropy Meeting from Marc Palahi, CEO of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance. Afterward, President Prabowo and King Charles were led to the Grand Hall to attend the meeting's final session.

"This philanthropy meeting has been ongoing since the morning, with the presence of President Prabowo and King Charles focused on the closing portion of the event," according to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

According to a report from the Presidential Secretariat, the conservation programs discussed by Prabowo and King Charles have several objectives. These include creating safe wildlife corridors, mitigating human-elephant conflict, and protecting the remaining critical habitat for Sumatran elephants.

"This approach is also aimed at supporting forest rehabilitation and conservation efforts that actively involve local communities," read a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

During his meeting with King Charles III, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Desra Percaya. Two officials who are also members of Prabowo's family, the President's Special Envoy for Energy and the Environment Hashim Djojohadikusumo and Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Budi Djiwandono, also attended the conservation forum.

In addition to meeting King Charles III, Prabowo participated in several other activities during his visit to the United Kingdom. The Head of State met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, and several British university leaders.

In the meeting with Keir Starmer, Prabowo discussed cooperation in the maritime sector and education. "We are very pleased to continue this maritime partnership. I think it will be very important and strategic for Indonesia. I think it will be a crucial part of our maritime economic development," Prabowo said in a one-on-one meeting with Starmer at 10 Downing Street, London, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Starmer also expressed his appreciation for the two countries' cooperation in the maritime sector. "Thank you also for the maritime agreement we signed, albeit virtually at the G20, and that is measured in the many jobs that are truly important for the UK," he said.

Starmer said he and Prabowo had many topics to discuss. "Including education, which you also spoke about so passionately during your last visit here," he said.
