TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Deputy Minister of Transmigration Viva Yoga Mauladi stated that out of 3.1 million hectares of transmigration areas, approximately 600,000 hectares are planted with palm oil. This number encompasses the entire Indonesian regions, but predominantly in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and parts of South Sulawesi.

This figure does not yet include palm oil expansion and transwakarsa, which are managed independently by transmigration communities. According to Viva Yoga, palm oil is a priority for development as it brings foreign exchange and increases job opportunities.

"So, indeed, for the transmigration population, palm oil is like a gift from God," he said after the anniversary and the launching of the 45 Years of GAPKI book in Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 30, 2026.

He also mentioned the success of several programs, such as in some transmigration areas like in Jambi. Yoga observed the transmigrants participating in the People's Plantation (PIR) palm oil transmigration, supported by the private sector through a profit-sharing scheme. After several years in the program, the land becomes their own.

However, the commodities grown in transmigration areas depend on their respective superior products. Transmigration areas in Jambi and Riau are mostly planted with palm oil. "But in Papua, they grow rice."

Then, in addition to rice, transmigrants in Central Sulawesi also grow horticultural crops, durian, and cocoa. According to him, the Ministry of Transmigration is developing transmigration areas as new centers for economic growth. This is done by enhancing superior products that can be developed to promote welfare and regional economic growth.

Previously, Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated that they are mapping the economic potential in transmigration areas to increase regional productivity, drive economic growth, and prevent abandoned land.

As reported by Antara, Iftitah stated that the mapping is part of the paradigm shift in transmigration, which is no longer solely focused on land distribution but on strengthening sustainable economic activities.
