Netanyahu Claims Right to Attack Gaza, Lebanon Despite Civilian Casualties

TEMPO.COJakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted his refusal to commit to ceasefires in both Gaza and Lebanon, stating that he will not seek permission from any external party before launching attacks.

"Israel is an independent state. We will defend ourselves with our own forces, and we will continue to control our destiny. We do not seek anyone's approval for this. We control our security," Netanyahu told his ministers at the beginning of his government's weekly meeting, as reported by China Daily.

Netanyahu frames his stance as necessary for "Israel's defense" and sovereignty, despite reports of repeatedly violating ceasefire agreements brokered by US President Donald Trump and the international community. This defense narrative is once again being used to justify attacks on the Gaza population.

As reported by Arab News, Israel conducted "targeted attacks" in central Gaza on an individual they claimed was planning an attack on the Israeli army. The ceasefire, which was supposed to be in effect following two years of conflict in Gaza, has been violated, with Israel reportedly using various pretexts to justify its actions.

Witnesses on the ground stated that drone attacks killed four Palestinian civilians over the weekend. Additionally, gunfire from tanks was reported in the eastern part of Gaza City.

Assigning Blame to Hamas

Al Jazeera reported that the Israeli military stated on Sunday that Hamas had violated the agreement, claiming two of its fighters had killed two Israeli soldiers in Rafah. Israel subsequently launched a large-scale and extensive attack across the Gaza Strip.

Conversely, Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, stated they were unaware of any clashes. They emphasized that Israel controls the Rafah area and asserted that the Qassam Brigades had not been in contact with anyone in Gaza.

Israel also accuses Hamas of intentionally delaying the return of the bodies of 28 prisoners killed in Israeli bombings in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Hamas stated that they require heavy equipment to evacuate the bodies of all Israeli prisoners, as well as the bodies of the 10,000 Palestinian people who were killed and buried in the Israeli bombings. This need for heavy equipment was also acknowledged by the United States and the mediators, Egypt and Qatar.

Since the ceasefire began on October 10, Israel has killed around 100 Palestinian civilians in Gaza and injured 230 others.
