TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an alert for coastal communities to stay away from the shoreline following a powerful earthquake that struck Russia on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
An updated magnitude 8.7 tectonic earthquake shook the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 6:24:50 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 52.51° N and 160.26° E, at a depth of 18 kilometers.
"Based on reports from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), this earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami in the regions of Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam," said Daryono, BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, in a statement released on Wednesday.
Daryono added that, according to BMKG's analysis, the earthquake has the potential to generate a tsunami in Indonesia with a status of Waspada or Caution, with wave heights anticipated to be less than 0.5 meters.
The areas in Indonesia potentially affected by the tsunami include:
Talaud (estimated time of arrival: 14:52:24 local time)
Gorontalo City (ETA: 16:39:54 local time)
North Halmahera (ETA: 16:04:24 local time)
Manokwari (ETA: 16:08:54 local time)
Rajaampat (ETA: 16:18:54 local time)
Biaknumfor (ETA: 16:21:54 local time)
Supiori (ETA: 16:21:54 local time)
Northern Sorong (ETA: 16:24:54 local time)
Jayapura (ETA: 16:30:24 local time)
Sarmi (ETA: 16:30:24 local time)
Daryono explained that the earthquake is considered a shallow event caused by subduction plate activity in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. "This earthquake had an upward thrust fault mechanism," he stated.
As of 8:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time(WIB), monitoring had recorded seven aftershocks, with the largest measuring M6.9 and the smallest M5.4.
