TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake that was widely felt across parts of West Java early Friday, March 13, 2026.

The tectonic quake struck at 02:18 AM local time, initially measured at magnitude 5.4 before being revised to 5.3. Residents in several cities, including Cianjur, Sukabumi, Bandung, Cimahi, and Bogor, reported feeling the tremor.

BMKG said the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 8.04 degrees south latitude and 106.86 degrees east longitude, in the sea about 121 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi Regency.

“The earthquake occurred offshore at a depth of 53 kilometers and is classified as a shallow earthquake,” said Rahmat Triyono, Acting Director for Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, in a written statement.

According to Rahmat, the quake was triggered by subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate, a common tectonic process along Indonesia’s southern seismic zone. Analysis indicates the earthquake had a strike-slip fault movement mechanism.

The strongest shaking, measured at IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, was recorded in the Cidolog and Ciracap areas, meaning the tremor could be widely felt indoors.

Moderate shaking of III–IV MMI was reported in several locations, including Tasikmalaya, Cijati, Pagelaran, Sukanegara, Agrabinta, Sindangbarang, Garut, Cidahu, Cimanggu, Campaka, Jampang Tengah, Kadupandak, and Tegal Buleud.

On the MMI scale, intensity III is typically felt indoors and may resemble the vibration of a passing truck. Such shaking was reported in Bayah, Klapanunggal, and Bandung Regency.

Weaker tremors of II–III MMI were also felt as far as Pangandaran and Ciamis.

“Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami,” Rahmat said.

BMKG reported no aftershocks as of 02:50 AM local time, and no damage to buildings has been reported so far.
