TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lonely Planet's Best in Travel list has named a culinary adventure in the old districts of Dubai, especially Bur Dubai and Deira, one of the world's best experiences for 2026. This award highlights the unique flavors of Dubai, influenced by over 200 nationalities, making this culinary tour a major attraction for global tourists who want to explore culture through food.
In Lonely Planet's annual list, the Old Dubai culinary tour was selected as one of the 25 outstanding experiences out of 50 global options, which also includes 25 destinations. This is the first time a specific attraction in Dubai has been recognized, following the city's listing as one of the best cities in 2020. Centered around Dubai Creek, this area offers a blend of local ingredients, traditional recipes, and an enchanting, authentic atmosphere.
Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, emphasized that this award strengthens Dubai's position as a global culinary hub. "Recognition from Lonely Planet reflects the richness of our culinary heritage and the industry's dedication to continually offer unique experiences," Kazim said in a statement received by Tempo.
Meanwhile, Tom Hall, Vice President of Lonely Planet, referred to this tour as a window to the city's history. "Exploring Old Dubai through its culinary offerings provides a deep perspective on the city's historical side," he said.
Culinary Destinations in Dubai
For those planning to visit Dubai, Bur Dubai, a culinary destination, offers iconic spots such as the Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. This unique establishment combines a museum with a restaurant and offers the signature dish of lamb machboos: marinated lamb with saffron rice.
Not to be missed is Al Ustad Special Kabab, an old Persian restaurant known for its jumbo portions of chicken or lamb kebabs at pocket-friendly prices. Arabian Tea House, established in 1997, is ideal for relaxing with biryani deyay or laham served with fresh yogurt. Meanwhile, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) invites visitors to experience Emirati culture through cuisine.
On the other hand, in Deira, the northern area of Dubai Creek is filled with options ranging from restaurants to traditional markets. Al Bait Al Baghdadi offers authentic shawarma in an old Arabian house setting. For those with a sweet tooth, Al Samadi Sweets serves ma'amoul filled with spiced dates. Ravi Restaurant, a legend since 1978, excels with tender beef nihari cooked slowly. For a refreshing treat, visit Ashwaq Cafe in Spice Souk for fresh falooda, or explore the Deira Waterfront Market for fresh seafood.
This experience can be enjoyed through guided tours or independently, while exploring the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood or the Gold Souk. The Dubai Department of Economic Development and Tourism continues to promote this initiative as part of its agenda to strengthen the city's position as a premier destination, aiming to double economic growth by 2033.
