TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anindya Novyan Bakrie, Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), believes that Panasonic Holdings Corp's global layoffs could affect the domestic business world. "Layoffs will certainly have an impact wherever they happen, and our task is to create new job opportunities and provide compensation," said Anindya when interviewed by journalists at Tempo Scan Tower, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
According to Anindya, layoffs occur not only due to economic factors but also due to technological disruption and policies. "There will certainly be reductions here and there, but there must also be additions," he said.
Anindya is optimistic that Indonesia's economic growth could rise above 5 percent and reach 8 percent. "However, it's important to note that equal distribution and empowerment are possible."
In contrast to Kadin's view, the Ministry of Industry believes that the Japanese electronics giant's layoffs will not affect Indonesia. Panasonic Holdings Corp is reportedly planning to lay off 10,000 employees in its factories in several countries.
The ministry's spokesperson, Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, stated that Indonesia remains an important production base for Panasonic in the Southeast Asian region. He said that the factories in Indonesia are the basis for exporting to more than 80 countries.
However, Febri admitted that utilization in the electronics industry is currently low, at 50.64 percent in the first quarter of 2025. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the utilization in this sector reached 75.6 percent. According to Febri, this condition serves as a reminder for all industry players and employees to continue to adapt.
Additionally, Febri stated that the government is interested in increasing utilization by protecting the domestic market from the assault of imported electronic products. The government is also maintaining existing electronic investments in Indonesia and attracting new investments, which is also the government's focus.
Febri added that Indonesia has a major advantage as a strong domestic market. Indonesian market, according to him, is one of the largest in the region. Maintaining industrial stability and enhancing competitiveness are government priorities.
The government is also striving to boost the productivity of the electronics industry through incentives, industrial workforce training, and strengthening technology-based manufacturing ecosystems.
