Jakarta Civil Servants Told to Take Public Transport on Wednesdays or Face Trouble

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized that civil servants (ASN) who fail to follow the policy of using public transportation every Wednesday may encounter obstacles, even though no formal sanctions are imposed.

Those who opt to ignore the regulation might struggle to find parking for their private vehicles, he said.

Pramono added that the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) has been tasked with monitoring ASN who continue using private vehicles, following the issuance of Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) Number 6 of 2025, which he signed on April 23, 2025.

"If they use private vehicles, it will definitely be known. I also asked the Public Order Agency to monitor who is using private vehicles. So, I normally work in layers, I know about it," he said after attending the Regional Leadership Consultation of Aisyiyah DKI Jakarta at Hotel Balairung, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

"The bottom line is if they do not comply, they will definitely have difficulties on their own."

As part of the enforcement, access to the Jakarta City Hall on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan has been physically restricted using road barriers and traffic cones.

A barrier placed in the middle of the entrance road is intended to block private vehicles, and three security officers have been assigned to guard the gate.

Pramono explained that this instruction applies to all civil servants in Jakarta, totaling 65,000 personnel, including 45,000 regular civil servants and the rest as Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK).

"All of them are required to use public transportation because the Jakarta government no longer provides transportation facilities," he said.

He also noted a positive response from civil servants on the first day of implementation. Many shared their commuting experiences using public transit via social media, tagging his Instagram, TikTok, and X accounts.

"On average, they welcomed it with high enthusiasm," he said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government's directive requiring civil servants to use public transportation every Wednesday is outlined in Ingub Number 6 of 2025.

"We have signed a Regional Regulation that every Wednesday we will somewhat force all civil servants in Jakarta to use public transportation," Pramono said in a written statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The policy was officially implemented today. Governor Pramono traveled from his official residence in Taman Suropati to City Hall using a Transjakarta bus, while Deputy Governor Rano Karno commuted via MRT and Transjakarta from his home in Lebak Bulus.
