TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To exercise greater discretion on social media and ensure focus, Indonesian police officers are now barred from live streaming while carrying out their duties.
"The policy is aimed at building awareness so police officers can use social media wisely, as well as to maintain and enhance the institution's image, credibility, and reputation responsibly, professionally, proportionally, and procedurally," said Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, the Head of the Public Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in a written statement on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The sweeping ban on live streams across all social media platforms was previously shared by the @sahabatpropam Instagram account.
"Every police force official is expected to remain focused on their duties, responsibilities, and service to the community," as stated in the post on April 31, 2026.
In his statement, Johnny explained that the police are still allowed to use social media, but only in relations of public relations under the coordination of the Polri Public Relations department.
"Social media can be utilized positively to support Polri's performance and productivity, especially in public relations functions. However, its use must be coordinated and not carried out indiscriminately by members while on duty," he added.
Furthermore, Johnny stated that the policy is based on the Telegram Letter Number STR/1517/VI/WAS.2/2024, which serves as the basis for strengthening supervision of personnel's activities in digital space, especially while on official duty.
In addition, Johnny mentioned that the policy is also based on Polri Regulation Number 7 of 2022 and Government Regulation Number 2 of 2003 concerning police discipline. "Both regulations emphasize the importance of ethics, responsibility, and professionalism in every action, including on social media," he said.
