Indonesian Govt Urges Waste Facilities to Stop Using Chimneys; Here's Why

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister, Hanif Faishol Nurofiq, has urged regional regulators not to use a chimney for burning waste. The vertical pipe outlets are considered to trigger pollution, especially when used in Final Disposal Sites (TPA) that use open dumping systems.

"Do not use a chimney to burn trash. It is dangerous," he said after giving a speech at the Environmental Forum of the Association of All Indonesian City Governments (APEKSI) in Surabaya on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

According to Hanif, chimneys at incineration sites can produce toxic compounds, such as dioxins and furans. Both micrometer-sized compounds can persist for up to 30 years on land and in the sea. "They can cause abnormal baby growth from cancerous sources," he said.

Hanif also mentioned the issue of microplastics, which has recently become the subject of discussion due to water pollution. According to him, microplastic pollution is also a result of open dumping systems at TPA.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is preparing a national movement to support Indonesia's waste-free initiative. According to Hanif, only 39.1 percent, or around 22.9 million tons of waste in Indonesia, out of 56.6 million tons in 2023, is managed by the central government.

Regulators target mandatory waste management completion by 2029. The management amount is also targeted to increase to 51 percent this year. "There is an 11 percent gap that we must achieve in the next few months," said Hanif.

The Surabaya City Government also targets 500 residential areas (RW) for independent waste management. According to Hanif, other cities in Indonesia should also be able to address waste problems. He hopes the program implemented by the Surabaya Government can contribute to the national target over the next 2 years.
