Indonesian Govt Ramps Up Crab Cultivation to Meet Export Surge

6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) is intensifying the crab cultivation to accommodate the increasing export demand. One way is to help local crab cultivators gain technical skills in crab breeding technology.

The MMAF's Director General of Fisheries Cultivation, Tb Haeru Rahayu, said cultivation is a strategic step in preserving the ecosystem of crabs. He is concerned that the high market demand could lead to excessive capture of the crabs in the wild.

Furthermore, Haeru stated that crab cultivation also strengthens the economic stability of coastal communities. This is because the animal is ranked fourth in Indonesia's main export commodities to several countries in the world. "Therefore, it is important to restock and encourage cultivation activities in the community," said Haeru in a statement quoted on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

According to Haeru, the economic income from crab exports reached US$512.35 million, or about 8.6 percent of Indonesia's total fishery exports last year. He mentioned that this figure will continue to increase following the high demand for crabs in the global market.

Haeru revealed one of the MMAF's cultivation efforts, collaborating with the Indonesian Crab Management Association (APRI), which has been ongoing for the past year. He said this collaboration successfully passed the breeding stage from the zoea or newly hatched larvae phase to the megalopa or crabs that already have claws and legs.

Likewise, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono affirmed his ministry's commitment to developing fishery cultivation. This is done by supporting the cultivation of crabs, which is one of the five leading export commodities. According to him, this cultivation can maximize market opportunities as well as maintain the sustainability of fishery habitats in the wild.
