TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation plans to implement a policy to return international flight waste to its country of origin. "So that we do not receive waste from other countries," said Sokhib Al Rohman, Director of Aircraft Airworthiness and Operation at the Ministry of Transportation in Jakarta, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Sokhib explained that Japan is a country that regulates the policy of returning flight waste to its country of origin.
He said that after the aircraft lands in Japan, the flight attendants will collect the waste and send it back to the country of origin using cargo planes. "We have to be able to follow that, why not?" he added.
Rohman stated that waste management at airports requires a large amount of cost and energy. If not handled properly, airports could become landfills and even sources of waste pollution.
He used Soekarno-Hatta Airport as an example, explaining that it produces 85 million pieces of trash from its 85,000 daily passengers.
He says that the policy of returning waste from international flights is an important consideration in airport waste management.
Aside from physical waste, Rohman also highlighted the emissions generated from aircraft activities.
He predicted that, by 2027, all airports, airlines, and aviation industries would be able to calculate their carbon emissions. Rohman stated that, as of now, around 10 airports have this capability.
He revealed that the aviation industry generated more than 234,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) this year. Rohman stated that carbon emission calculations are used as the basis for policies aimed at reducing the production of these compounds.
He cited one of the government's programs to reduce carbon emissions is the modernization of ground handling equipment at airports using electric vehicles.
In addition, according to Rohman, 54 airports were recorded as using solar panels for LED lighting by December 2024. According to Rohman, the use of this energy saved around 27,000 tons.
Furthermore, 106 airports and three airport authority offices now use solar-powered lighting, successfully saving 1,991 tons of energy.
Meanwhile, Rohman noted that 18 airports have switched to full LED lighting systems.
