TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said that Indonesia and Brazil are leading developing countries with similar historical and economic backgrounds. He also described Brazil as an important leader of the Global South.
Prabowo conveyed this statement to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during their meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The meeting was part of President Lula’s state visit to Indonesia.
“Brazil is a very important leader from the South, a leader among developing countries. Both of us share similar backgrounds,” Prabowo told Lula da Silva.
The president said that both Indonesia and Brazil are great nations with strong leadership and remarkable achievements. “We have great countries, strong and successful nations led by heroic and thriving leaders,” Prabowo said.
The Gerindra Party chairman also noted that Indonesia and Brazil have long enjoyed friendly relations. He warmly welcomed Lula da Silva’s visit, recalling the hospitality he received during his state visit to Brazil in July.
“I remember how warmly you welcomed us in Brazil. Now it is my honor to welcome you here in Jakarta,” he said.
Prabowo further expressed his respect and admiration for Lula da Silva’s policies, particularly his focus on social welfare and poverty reduction. He emphasized that Indonesia shares the same vision of prioritizing people’s well-being.
“You have the same great interest as we do, to improve the welfare of your people. That is also my main priority: the welfare of the Indonesian people,” Prabowo said.
President Lula da Silva arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2025, at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, the visit marks a reciprocal trip following President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Brasília last July. “This visit is also expected to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries in various fields,” the statement said.
