TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is collaborating with the government of the United Kingdom (UK) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) policies in Indonesia. This cooperation is outlined in the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Policy Dialogue Country Report, which targets six sectors: e-commerce, financial services, creative economy, health, sustainability, and education.
Vice Minister of Komdigi Nezar Patria stated that both parties are currently drafting AI regulations targeted to be completed by the end of July 2025. "We expect the regulations to be in its final draft by the end of this month. There will be further discussions in August and September. The final form will be a presidential regulation (Perpres)," said Nezar at the Komdigi Office, Jakarta, on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Nezar mentioned that the government plays an essential role in accelerating the formulation of regulations to promote AI innovation. He highlighted issues on governance, digital infrastructure, and talent development as priorities.
The report identifies six key aspects in strengthening the AI ecosystem, namely digital infrastructure, data governance, digital talent, investment, ethics, and inclusivity. This perspective serves as the basis for national policy formulation.
Nezar explained that the report emphasizes two main things: the building blocks and the digital ecosystem. "The building blocks required by Indonesia to demonstrate meaningful AI adoption, as well as several use cases, challenges, and implications of AI utilization in the six key sectors," he said.
He hopes that these recommendations will expand the understanding of the AI landscape in Indonesia and assist the government in determining policy direction. "After the draft is completed, it will then be harmonized by the Ministry of Law and the State Secretariat," Nezar said.
Head of Economics and Social Affairs at the British Embassy in Jakarta, Samuel Hayes, hopes that this report will serve as the basis for Indonesia's policy formulation. "We hope to provide diverse perspectives in supporting policy-making," he said.
The Expert Staff of Komdigi for Socio-Economic Affairs, Wijaya Kusumawardhana, mentioned that the discussion on the AI roadmap has entered the legislative stage. The Directorate General of Digital Economy at Komdigi has gathered inputs from various ministries and institutions before submitting them to the Ministry of Law.
