TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan stated that the government is on alert for a potential tsunami threat in several regions of Indonesia following an earthquake in Russia.
A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 06:24:50 AM WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has released a list of 10 Indonesian regions potentially at risk of a tsunami due to the earthquake. Based on this, Budi Gunawan said that both central and regional governments are on high alert.
"All government components, both central and regional, are ready to anticipate and act swiftly and accurately. The safety of the public is the government's top priority," Budi Gunawan said in an official statement on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
The former Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) instructed several stakeholders to establish emergency response posts.
This instruction was directed to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the Indonesian National Police, BMKG, and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).
In addition to setting up posts to increase vigilance against potential tsunamis, these agencies must also prepare field personnel for possible evacuations. Budi also ordered maritime and air search and rescue teams to remain on standby in vulnerable areas and to reduce mass activities in coastal and port regions.
They are also instructed to issue official warnings every 30 minutes, urging the public to limit beach activities. "I also urge the public to remain calm, not panic, and follow official instructions in the field," said the retired police general.
Until BMKG officially ends the tsunami threat warning in the 10 listed regions, Budi advised the public to stay away from beaches and river mouths. He also urged people not to spread unverified information and to rely only on official sources such as BMKG, BNPB, BPBD, the military, and the police.
Additionally, he encouraged the public to prepare emergency supplies as needed and to follow evacuation procedures if a tsunami occurs.
Previously, BMKG reported that 10 areas in Indonesia were on alert due to the potential of a tsunami with a height of less than 0.5 meters. The details are as follows:
Talaud (ETA 02:52:24 PM WITA)
