TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Recently landing in theaters, Project Hail Mary is quickly being hailed as one of the best science fiction movies in years. Adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel, the film stars Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller, under the direction of filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

While the story follows science teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace on a mission far beyond Earth, Project Hail Mary filming locations remain grounded on home soil. According to The Cinemaholic and Travel Pirates, the movie was shot entirely in England.

Care to know more of the details? Here are the three real-life Project Hail Mary filming locations.

List of Project Hail Mary Filming Locations

1. Shepperton Studios, Surrey

Project Hail Mary was reportedly filmed, with significant parts of its footage at Shepperton Studios in Surrey. Recognized as the world’s second-biggest film studio, the facility is home to 31 sound stages, two large backlots, over 1,000 credits, and full post-production facilities.

The scale and versatility of the studio made it possible to bring Project Hail Mary to life through practical set construction. The filmmakers were known to avoid the use of green and blue screens, instead opting to fully build the interior of the Hail Mary spacecraft on set. This approach also extended to the ship’s surroundings, using a black background for deep space scenes and color-shifting backdrops to recreate the aurora-like glow of the planets.

2. South Parade Pier, Portsmouth

Portsmouth also played a role in the production of Project Hail Mary, particularly at South Parade Pier. During filming, the popular seaside attraction was temporarily closed, with Ryan Gosling, along with the rest of the cast and crew, spotted on location in October 2024.

The pier's seaside views, boardwalk, and arcade areas appear in several scenes portraying Ryland Grace’s pre-mission life. Best of all, the pier is the only site fully open to the public among the Project Hail Mary filming locations, making it an accessible spot for fans to visit.

3. Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cambridgeshire

The movie’s last filming location is the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. Located in Cambridgeshire, the site is an active research facility operated by the University of Cambridge’s astrophysics program and the Cavendish Laboratory.

As it’s home to some of the world’s largest radio telescopes, the observatory brings an added layer of authenticity to the film’s setting. Its real-world scientific environment elevates the story’s credibility, especially as the plot centers on scientists attempting to decode a mysterious threat to the sun.

While most fans will follow Ryland Grace’s mission from theater seats, these Project Hail Mary filming locations witness the journey unfold day after day. Still, you’ll be the ones who get to experience it as intended, with the scale of IMAX screens and immersive audio.

If exploring real-life movie settings excites you, let’s continue the journey through locations where Harry Potter was filmed.
