China Fuels Indonesia's Biggest Trade Deficit in First Half of 2025

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChina has become the largest contributor to Indonesia's trade deficit. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's trade balance with China experienced a deficit of US$9.73 billion from January to June of 2025.

Pudji Ismartini, the Deputy of Statistics for Distribution and Services at BPS, explained that Indonesia's total trade balance in the first half of 2025 was a surplus of $19.48 billion. The United States was the largest contributor to the surplus. "Meanwhile, China contributed the deepest deficit, at US$9.73 billion. Singapore followed with a deficit of US$3.09 billion, and Australia followed with a deficit of US$2.66 billion," she said at the BPS press conference on Friday, August 1, 2025.

Based on Pudji's explanation, Indonesia's trade deficit with China has widened. From June to July of 2024, Indonesia's trade with China resulted in a deficit of $5.22 billion.

Additionally, China became the largest non-oil and gas import supplier from January to June 2025, with imports valued at US$40 billion, accounting for 39.97% of the total. Japan and the United States followed with imports valued at US$7.47 billion and US$4.87 billion, respectively.

During the first half of 2025, three non-oil and gas products from China contributed to the largest deficit. These three commodities were machinery and mechanical equipment and parts (HS84), electrical machinery and parts (HS85), and vehicles and parts (HS87).
