TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian U-23 national team manager Ahmed Zaki Iskandar confirmed that Gerald Vanenburg's squad will receive a bonus from the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) if they win the 2025 AFF U-23 Championship. "There will definitely be appreciation from the federation, from PSSI. That's for sure. And the targets have been set from the start," he said on Monday, July 28.
The Indonesian U-23 national team will compete for the championship title against Vietnam in the final, which will take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29. The match between the two teams will begin at 8:00 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and will be broadcast live on RCTI and streamed live on Vidio.
If they win, the Young Garuda will equal Vietnam's achievement of winning the tournament, formerly known as the AFF U-23 Championship, twice since its inception in 2005. Indonesia also won in 2019.
Ahmed Zaki could not confirm whether Kadek Arel and his teammates will also receive a bonus from the government. In response, he said, "We'll ask the Minister of Youth and Sports (Dito Ariotedjo) about the government's plans for a championship parade if they win the final. He declined to elaborate further on this matter. "Let's not wait until tomorrow. We'll fight first, and then we'll see what happens," he said.
This will be Indonesia's third final, having participated in this tournament three times since its 2019 victory in Cambodia. That time, Indonesia, coached by Indra Sjafri, lifted the trophy after defeating Thailand 2-1.
Indonesia's second final was in 2023 in Thailand. That time, the team coached by Shin Tae-yong had to lose to Vietnam after losing a penalty shootout 5-6.
Meanwhile, Thailand finished third in the 2025 AFF U-23 Championship after defeating the Philippines 3-1 in a match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Monday, July 28.
