TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for high waves that could occur across several regions from July 26-29, 2025.

BMKG forecaster Dian Millaty said the winds in the northern part of Indonesia move southwest at 4-25 knots, while southern Indonesia sees winds moving southeast at 4-30 knots.

"The highest wind speeds are observed in the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu to Lampung and the Indian Ocean south of Banten to East Java," Dian said in a written statement on Monday, July 28, 2025.

According to her, these conditions will prompt high waves from 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the North Natuna Sea, the southern part of the Karimata Strait, the middle part of the Java Sea, the middle part of the Makassar Strait, the Bali Sea, the middle part of the Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the western part of the Arafura Sea, the northern part of the Karimata Strait, the western part of the Java Sea, the eastern part of the Java Sea, the southern part of the Makassar Strait, the Sumbawa Sea, the eastern part of the Sulawesi Sea, and the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku.

Meanwhile, higher waves in the range of 2.5-4.0 meters are likely to occur in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Nias Islands, and the Mentawai Islands, the Indian Ocean south of Bali, NTT, and NTB.

High waves ranging from 4.0-6.0 meters are likely to occur in the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu the Indian Ocean south of Banten, Central Java, and East Java, Indian Ocean west of Lampung, and the Indian Ocean south of West Java and Yogyakarta.

"High waves may pose risks to maritime safety," Dian said.

Therefore, Dian urges residents, especially fishers, to remain vigilant of winds moving at more than 15 knots and high waves of over 1.5 meters. She also requested that barges be wary of wind speeds of 16 knots and wave heights of 1.5 meters.

"Ferries are advised to avoid wind speeds of up to 21 knots and high waves of up to 2.5 meters. Also, large vessels (cargo and cruise ships) should be cautious of wind speeds that could reach 27 knots and high waves of over 4 meters," she added.
