TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), said Payment ID will see a trial run through the distribution of social assistance (locally known as bansos) on the upcoming August 17.

Payment ID is a new digital payment system based on the Citizenship Identification Number (NIK) that integrates all individual financial activities. This system can record and combine data from various financial sources such as bank accounts, credit cards, e-wallets, and online loans.

Executive Director of the BI Communications Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, said the system and data infrastructure development of Payment ID may take several years.

"Therefore, BI will conduct a trial process for a specific use case only, namely to assist in the accuracy of non-cash social assistance distribution, which will commence on August 17 to support the Social Protection Program (Perlinsos)," Denny told Tempo on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Payment ID aims to protect the security of citizens' transactions. Personal data on Payment ID can only be used by authorities working with BI according to their respective fields.

The development and use of Payment ID data also refer to the confidentiality of personal data as laid out in Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection (PDP Law).

The use of individual data, according to Denny, must be based on provisions and systems that refer to the private consent-based principle. "We emphasize that the use of Payment ID still requires various trial stages, including personal data security, and must be equipped with various provisions and regulations based on PDP Law and other relevant existing laws."

Payment ID is part of the 2030 Indonesian Payment System Blueprint (BSPI). According to the Director of the BI Payment System Policy Department, Dudi Dermawan, this system allows authorities to fully understand a person's financial profile such as income, expenditures, as well as debt burdens and investments.

One of the system's implementations in the future is the credit application process, where banks can easily send a consent form to the customer's mobile phone.

Once approved, the system will provide access to the complete financial profile of the customer through BI-Payment Info. "Once I click OK, the bank will then transfer it to BI-Payment Info," Dudi said during the Editors Briefing in Labuan Bajo, Friday, July 18, 2025.
