TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ilham Renal, a student at the Indonesia University of Education (UPI, or Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia), was stabbed by unidentified assailants while participating in a protest in Bandung on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

UPI Public Relations Head Vidi Sukmayadi said Ilham's condition is stable, while being treated at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung.

"The victim was stabbed between 7:00-8:00 p.m. by a cluster of unidentified assailants," Vidi told Tempo on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

The accident took place near Trunojoyo street, in the vicinity of the West Java Regional Representative Council (DPRD) building. On Saturday afternoon until late at night, the demonstrators focused their actions in front of this building.

"At that time, he was watching the protest and was dragged by the running and rowdy crowd," said Vidi.

According to Vidi, the victim's mental condition is still affected by the attack. The university will provide legal assistance and support for medical treatment if necessary.

Ilham, according to Vidi, is a student in the economics education study program at UPI, class of 2019, who had just completed his undergraduate thesis defense.

According to the written statement of the UPI Student Executive Board, Ilham, who also works as a food delivery courier, was at the site of the demonstration that demanded the dissolution of DPR. He took the initiative to break up a mobbing, but ended up being attacked as well, causing his helmet to come off.

Ilham managed to escape the mob after being helped by an unidentified person to flee and was taken to an ambulance. He only found out that he had been stabbed when he saw the blood and was rushed to the hospital.

Hundreds of Protesters Injured

Hundreds of people were injured during a mass protest in front of the West Java DPRD building on Friday, August 29, 2025. Some of them were taken to the health post prepared by the Islamic University of Bandung (Unisba) at the campus hall.

"There were around 200 people brought to the post, most of them with complaints of suffocation due to tear gas," said Unisba Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean III Fajar Awalia Yulianto to Tempo on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Based on Tempo's observation at the site, the recorded victims were divided into two groups: students from various campuses in Bandung, totaling 69 people, and workers.

Almost all of them experienced shortness of breath, along with stinging eyes, blurry vision, and some had dislocated shoulders. Similarly, over a hundred other individuals were handled by medical teams.

"Some experienced seizures and hypothermia," said Fajar.

Some also suffered serious injuries, such as a drop in oxygen saturation and vomiting blood, so they were referred to the hospital. The victims arrived starting from 4:00 p.m. and the numbers continued to increase overnight.

According to Unisba Vice Rector III Amrullah Hayatudin, the health post is a form of humanitarian concern.

"Our focus is to provide humanitarian services, not to support anarchist actions or similar things," he said in a written statement on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

In addition to medical personnel, Unisba also prepared oxygen and ambulances. The provided facilities include emergency examination tools such as a stethoscope, oximeter, and basic medical equipment, first aid kits, as well as supporting logistics such as food and beverages for medical personnel.
