TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bridges have played a significant role in connecting cities, and even countries, since thousands of years ago. In its simplest form, a bridge was made of felled trees or bamboo sticks tied together and then placed to connect two separate spreads of land. However, as technology advances, there are thousand-year-old bridges still in use today.
The arched stone crossing, built during the Mycenaean Period, in the Bronze Age, around 3,354 years ago, still exists today. Remarkably, this ancient bridge is still used by pedestrians, and even cars, to this day.
The Arkadiko Bridge is located in Peloponnese, Greece, close to the modern road connecting the archaeological sites of Tiryns and Epidaurus in Argolis. The bridge, 21 meters in length and 5.6 meters in width, standing at 4 meters high, is estimated to have been built around 1330 BC.
Reported by Greek Reporter, Arkadiko Bridge, also known as Kazarma Bridge, connects the ancient city of Epidaurus with Mycenae.
The bridge is part of a military road between the two ancient cities, which is part of a wider Hellenic road network. Its impressive layout and style indicate that the bridge was originally used for horse-drawn chariots. The bridge was used to transport goods from one place to another, and was also traversed by Greek forces on their journey through the country. More than three thousand years later, this bridge is still used by the local population.
One of the most interesting features of the bridge is its construction known as Cyclopean masonry. The bridge was built without using any adhesive, such as mortar. Instead, the weight and symmetrical alignment of limestone blocks, placed on a vertical axis, made the bridge stable.
Some large stones were roughly shaped with a hammer, while most remained in their original form. Gaps between these stones were sometimes filled with smaller limestone boulders.
Arkadiko Bridge is one of four known arched bridges of Mycenaean construction near Arkadiko, all of which have the same design and age. One of them, the Petrogephyri bridge, crosses the same river stream 0.62 miles or about 1 kilometer west of the Arkadiko Bridge.
