TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reportedly gearing up for the 20th-anniversary edition of the iPhone, which is expected to feature a bezel-less design and cutting-edge battery technology, according to 9to5Mac.
The smartphone is believed to be the realization of the company's long-standing ambition to create a seamless piece of glass.
In several technology reviews, Apple is said to be developing a special edition iPhone that will be released in 2027, two decades after the launch of the first-generation iPhone.
"The company is preparing a major shake-up for the iPhone’s 20-year anniversary, including a foldable version and a bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass," as stated in 9to5Mac, quoted on Friday, May 16, 2025.
The Pro model is described as a device that makes extensive use of glass, with a design signaling more than just thinner bezels.
According to Korean site ET News, Apple suppliers are developing curved screen technology that allows the glass to curve on all four sides. This would result in a bezel-less, seamless appearance.
In addition to the curved display, Apple is also working on under-display camera (UDC) technology, eliminating the need for a hole in the screen to house the front camera.
ET News reports that Apple is currently in talks with Samsung Display and LG Display to finalize the screen technology. The design aligns with former Apple design chief Jony Ive’s vision of an iPhone that looks like a single, continuous piece of glass.
Beyond the design, the anniversary edition iPhone is also expected to feature a solid-state battery made entirely of silicon. This technology, which replaces graphite as the cathode, is said to improve energy density and extend battery life.
Solid-state batteries have been under development since 2017 and are now starting to appear in consumer products. With continued progress, this technology may be integrated into the 2027 iPhone model.
