TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Air Canada passenger plane collided with a fire truck on the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night local time, killing the aircraft’s pilot and co-pilot and injuring others, according to U.S. media reports and local officials.
According to CNN, citing local authorities, the crash left the two pilots dead and injured at least two people on the ground.
The collision occurred at around 11:40 PM local time on Sunday, March 22, 2026 (10:40 AM WIB on Monday), when an Air Canada flight operated by Jazz Aviation struck an emergency vehicle that had been dispatched to respond to a separate incident, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
“The airport is currently closed to facilitate emergency response and a thorough investigation,” a spokesperson said, adding that emergency protocols were activated immediately after the incident.
Two people inside the fire truck were reported injured in the collision. Officials said the vehicle had been responding to reports of an unidentified odor in the cockpit of another aircraft.
Air Canada said the CRJ-900 was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members at the time of the crash. Following the incident, LaGuardia Airport was shut down late Sunday, disrupting flight operations.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for all departing flights from LaGuardia, initially effective until 18:00 GMT (1:00 AM WIB on Tuesday), with the possibility of an extension as authorities continued emergency operations and the investigation.
The crash has prompted a major aviation safety investigation, with U.S. authorities working to determine how the rescue vehicle entered the runway as the aircraft was landing. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since deployed a team to investigate the deadly collision.
