6 Stress-Free Getaways in Asia for the Elderly

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is no age limit for traveling abroad. The elderly can also visit places they want to without worry or stress. Moreover, during their retirement years, when routine activities are no longer a part of their lives, they will have plenty of free time to travel.

As reported by the Times of India, many destinations in Asia are elderly-friendly. These destinations already have adequate infrastructure that facilitates the mobility of the elderly.

1. Penang, Malaysia

The flat city contours allow the elderly to easily walk and explore the colonial-era architecture. Penang also has several interesting cafés and markets that are popular among the elderly. The elderly can visit the age-inclusive Taman Lingkungan Lengkok Nipah, which has benches, flat pathways, and sports stations.

2. Singapore

Singapore has advanced infrastructure and accessibility features that make travel easier for the elderly. Singapore has wide pedestrian pathways and clear signage. All buses and trains are equipped with features for people with disabilities and the elderly, such as ramp-friendly paths or wheelchair-friendly seat designs. Its warm and comfortable climate throughout the year makes it an ideal place for the elderly to explore.

Singapore has high safety and security standards, which make it a safe place for tourists. Additionally, the country has good healthcare services in case medical treatment is needed. The Garden of the Bay and Sentosa Island are two recommended places to visit because both are designed with accessibility in mind.

3. Kyoto, Japan

Despite some overtourism spots, Kyoto is also an elderly-friendly destination because it has efficient public transportation equipped to accommodate the elderly, such as lifts and ramps. Since Japanese culture is ingrained with the concept of respecting the elderly, elderly citizens will also find a friendly environment. Visitors can immerse themselves in the cultural richness here, which also emphasizes respect for the elderly, by visiting historical temples, sacred places, and traditional environments like Gion and Higashiyama.

4. Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei has adopted the WHO's age-friendly city version since 2012. From transportation and housing to social inclusion and community participation, everything is already available. They have also built senior service centers and special eateries for the elderly. Places that can be visited by the elderly include the Taipei 101 Observatory, the National Palace Museum, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, as well as the Maokong Gondola. These tourist attractions have provided ramp paths, lifts, and easily accessible toilets. The residents are also known to be friendly and respectful towards elderly visitors.

5. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul in South Korea also has good infrastructure and has joined the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities. Its architecture includes accessible pathways, underground tunnels, and toilets with safety rails, emergency systems, and better signage. Priority seating in public transportation is also available here.

6. Chiang Mai, Thailand

In Thailand, Chiang Mai is an elderly-friendly destination. The elderly can visit Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Royal Park Rajapruek, which feature ramp paths, walking paths, and flat surfaces, making them accessible and elderly-friendly. This place is also known for its health retreats, spa services, yoga centers, and meditation, which can be chosen for relaxation and self-calming. The place also has a peaceful atmosphere as it is located amidst mountains.
