Yogyakarta Plans New Tourism Events for Borobudur and Prambanan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, has teamed up with the management of Prambanan, Borobudur, and Ratu Boko temples (Injourney Destination Management-PT TWC) to jointly overhaul various tourism events.

The CEO of Injourney Destination Management, Febrina Intan, revealed that the revamping and promotion of tourism aims to bolster the interest of both domestic and international tourists in Yogyakarta’s offerings.

"The event revamping is designed to be more profound, featuring a strong emotional narrative. Events such as International Wellness Day and the Satu Suro tradition will be repackaged so that tourists do not merely visit for photos, but stay longer and support the local economy," Febrina stated following a meeting with Sultan HB X on Monday, January 26, 2026.

To date, Prambanan and Borobudur have successfully attracted visitors through a diverse range of activities. At Prambanan, annual events like the Prambanan Jazz Festival maintain tourist interest by harmonizing modern music with the grandeur of 9th-century heritage, drawing thousands of domestic and international attendees. The Ramayana Ballet has also become a highly sought-after colossal performance for tourists wishing to experience the epic pulse of Javanese history under the moonlight.

Meanwhile, Borobudur Temple hosts the iconic Waisak celebration, where the release of thousands of lanterns into the night sky has become a globally recognized spectacle. Sports events such as the Borobudur Marathon have successfully transformed the temple area into a premier sports tourism destination that drives the local economy. The success of these initiatives will now be adopted to revamp various other events across Yogyakarta.

Febrina stated that through this new collaboration, Prambanan, Ratu Boko, and Borobudur will no longer stand as isolated tourist spots but will serve as the driving force for a broader regional tourism ecosystem.

During the meeting, the Sultan also expressed his hope that sectoral barriers, which previously caused destination promotions to operate independently, would be dismantled. "So it is not just about highlighting one or two spots like Prambanan or Borobudur; tourism promotions must package the entire ecosystem comprehensively," Febrina explained.

In addition to events, Injourney Destination Management will increase the involvement of local SMEs in tourism agendas. By utilizing the SiBakul SME database platform, local businesses will become part of the supply chain for tourism events held at the temples and beyond. "The concept is that we will build a solid and interconnected tourism ecosystem all the way down," she said.

With this new collaboration, Yogyakarta will be visited not only for its natural beauty and landscapes but also for the experiences and stories offered in every corner. The flow of tourist distribution is expected to be more even, reaching sectors of the creative economy that have not yet been fully touched by the international market.

"The main focus of this transformation is the revamping of the annual calendar of events, which will no longer be mere ceremonies but performances with spirit and emotional appeal," she concluded.
