TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The School of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, the United States, has announced that the daughter of a senior Iranian official, Ali Larijani, Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, is no longer employed at the university. This was reported by the student-run campus newspaper on Saturday, as quoted by Al Arabiya.
Quoting Sandra Wong, the Dean of the School of Medicine at Emory University, the newspaper said that an email was sent to the medical faculty on January 24 announcing that a doctor who is also the daughter of a senior government official in Iran is no longer an employee of the University.
The news comes after protests in Iran that killed thousands of people, and also after protests by Iranian-American demonstrators, who gathered outside the Winship Emory Cancer Institute to oppose the recruitment, the newspaper stated.
"Before her departure from Emory, Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani was an assistant professor in the department of hematology and medical oncology at the medical school," reported the Emory Wheel.
It was added that Ardeshir-Larijani's Emory faculty page and Emory Healthcare page have not been visible since January 24.
The newspaper also quoted a statement from Andrea Clement, the Deputy Director of Public Relations at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, stating that the matter was a "personnel issue."
"Emory is committed to advancing patient care, research, and education," said Clement, according to the Emory Wheel. "Our employees are hired in full compliance with state and federal laws and other applicable requirements."
Ali Larijani is the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. He was sanctioned by the U.S. on January 15, along with other officials.
At that time, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury said they were "taking action against the architects of the Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators."
