Ukraine Strikes Russian Electronic Weapons Facility as Putin and Trump Speak on Phone

8 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine attacked a strategic Russian military facility in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic, on Saturday night, July 5, 2025. The attack targeted JSC VNIIR-Progress, a Russian state-owned institution that develops electronic warfare systems. According to a report by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukrainian weapons successfully reached the target area.

According to the Kyiv Independent, the facility produces Kometa antennas used to disrupt satellite, radio, and radar signals. These components are a key part of Russia's high-precision weapons systems, such as the Shahed drone, Iskander-K cruise missiles, and aerial bombs. All of these systems are used by Russia to attack civilian and military targets in Ukraine.

Cheboksary is located about 1,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and is deep inside Russian territory. This is the second time the facility has been targeted. Previously, on June 9, an explosion and fire also occurred at VNIIR-Progress due to a drone attack.

Several local Telegram channels reported that explosions were heard in Cheboksary on the night of the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down two drones in the area. VNIIR-Progress has been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for its role in supporting Russian military aggression.

The Ukrainian attack came a day after Russia launched its largest airstrike since its invasion of Ukraine began more than three years ago. According to CBS News, the attack, which lasted for seven hours from Thursday night to Friday morning, July 4, targeted the capital Kyiv and several other regions.

At least 23 people were reported injured and extensive damage was caused in several districts. Explosions were heard across the city, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens. Debris was strewn across the streets, and fires were seen burning several high-rise buildings. “It was a hard, sleepless night,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky said the timing of the attack was no coincidence, as it coincided with a phone call between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The first airstrikes on our city and region began almost simultaneously with the beginning of media coverage of President Trump’s phone call with Putin,” Zelensky wrote in his official statement.
