TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani stated that the process towards a permanent peace in Gaza is at risk of failing without quick steps from the parties involved. Speaking at the Doha Forum on Saturday, December 6, he emphasized that the current situation is not a full ceasefire.
"We are at a critical moment. It’s not yet there. So what we have just done is a pause," Al Thani said, as reported by Al Jazeera. He added that the cessation of violence cannot be called a ceasefire without a full withdrawal of Israeli troops, restoration of stability, and freedom of movement for the Palestinian people.
"A ceasefire cannot be completed unless there is a full withdrawal of Israeli forces, there is stability back in Gaza, people can go in and out, which is not the case today," he said.
Peace Negotiations Still Hindered
Al Thani said that the United States-backed ceasefire consolidation negotiations are at a "critical" point. Qatar, as the main mediator, is working to push for the advanced phase of the peace plan outlined by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the two-year war in Gaza. The plan includes the formation of a temporary government in Gaza, overseen by an international Board of Peace (BoP) and supported by joint security forces (ISF).
However, according to an Arab News report, the composition and mandate of the international forces remain a major issue. Last Thursday, the Israeli delegation met with mediators in Cairo to discuss the immediate return of the last hostage remaining in Gaza.
Since the ceasefire took effect almost a month ago, Hamas has returned all 20 living hostages and 27 bodies in exchange for the release of around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and convicts.
Warning from Turkey
Turkey also issued a similar warning. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the peace process could lose momentum if the United States does not intervene promptly. "Senior U.S. officials need to intervene in a timely manner so that we can go into the second phase, otherwise we can lose momentum," said Fidan. He emphasized that Hamas has fulfilled almost all of its obligations, with one hostage's body still in Gaza.
Amidst the negotiation process, violence in Gaza continues. There have been around 600 ceasefire violations in the past seven weeks. On Saturday, December 6, three Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza. Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the U.S.-supported ceasefire agreement.
