Prabowo's Nephew Steps Closer to Secure Bank Indonesia Key Role

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House's Commission XI has picked Thomas Djiwandono as the new Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, a role decided less than 30 minutes after his fit and proper test. 

As observed at the House of Representatives (DPR) building, Thomas, the nephew of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, was seen exiting the building at 5:40 p.m. local time. The leaders of Commission XI announced its confirmation at around 5:53 p.m.

House Commission XI chair Mukhamad Misbakhun stated that Thomas' appointment was decided through deliberation and consensus process.

"It has been decided that the Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, replacing Juda Agung who resigned, is Thomas A.M. Djiwandono," said Misbakhun.

The voting, Misbakhun assured, went down for 30 minutes, with no objections from the members. 

According to Misbakhun, the former Treasurer General of the Gerindra Party was chosen since Thomas was deemed able to embrace the voices of all political parties. "The consideration is that Bapak Thomas is a figure that can be accepted by all political parties," he said.

According to Misbakhun, the faction members agreed that Thomas is suitable for Bank Indonesia. He also dismissed criticism about the threat the appointment of Prabowo's nephew could pose to the central bank's independence.

"But he [Thomas] very professionally explained the process taken in adopting these policies. Therefore, in my opinion, this issue can be set aside," he said, adding that there is "professionalism."

Thomas, familiarly known as Tommy, was announced by DPR Commission XI as a candidate for Bank Indonesia's Deputy Governor. He competed against Head of the Macro-Prudential Policy Department of BI, Solikin Juhro, and the Head of the BI Payment System Policy Department, Dicky Kartikoyono.
