6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, or MBS, at Al-Salam Palace, Jeddah, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The two leaders agreed on several strategic cooperation initiatives.

During this state visit to Saudi Arabia, Prabowo and Crown Prince MBS held a private tete-a-tete meeting, followed by a bilateral discussion with their respective delegations. In the bilateral meeting, they signed the Minutes of Meeting (MoM) of the Indonesia-Saudi Arabia High-Level Coordination Council.

The MoU reinforces Indonesia's standing as a strategic partner to Saudi Arabia in Southeast Asia. This High-Level Coordination Council format has also been utilized by Saudi Arabia in its strategic relations with the United States and the People's Republic of China.

A joint statement from both countries, cited by the Presidential Secretariat, indicated that Prabowo and MBS highlighted the strength of existing bilateral economic ties and emphasized expanding cooperation in priority sectors.

"The two parties agreed on the importance of enhancing cooperation, particularly in priority sectors, supporting the private sector partnership of both countries, and seizing the opportunities offered by Saudi Vision 2030 and Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) 2045," the joint statement quoted.

In the past five years, trade between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia has reached approximately US$31.5 billion or Rp510 trillion, making Saudi Arabia Indonesia's main trading partner in the region. To boost trade, Prabowo and MBS stressed the importance of increasing trade volume, facilitating official and private sector visits, and regularly organizing business forums through the Saudi-Indonesian Business Council.

In the energy sector, Indonesia acknowledged Saudi Arabia's crucial role in maintaining global oil market stability and underscored the importance of energy supply security. Both countries agreed on several key cooperation areas: crude oil and its derivatives supply, refinery and petrochemical projects, new and renewable energy, energy efficiency, carbon management, clean hydrogen technology, and the use of artificial intelligence for sustainable energy.

Specifically in the mineral sector, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia will collaborate on exchanging geological expertise, mining exploration, processing, and applying modern technology. As a concrete follow-up, they agreed to create a joint roadmap to establish a conducive investment environment, facilitate capital flow, and address regulatory obstacles.

This strategic cooperation forms an important foundation for strengthening the long-term economic partnership between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable, green, and inclusive development in the era of global transformation.

Several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Indonesian and Saudi business entities have been recorded, with a total value of approximately US$27 billion or Rp437.2 trillion. These agreements cover clean energy, the petrochemical industry, and aviation fuel services.
