Prabowo Calls for Accountability, Oversight of Military Funds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has asked Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto to crack down against misappropriation of state funds by their staff members. Both institutions, he said, must ensure accountability in budget management.

Prabowo's instructions were conveyed by Sjafrie, who attended a closed-door meeting at Prabowo's residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Sunday, January 25.

"Maintaining accountability in managing the budget the state allocates for the military, ensuring law enforcement against those misusing and misappropriating the funds," he said in Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.

According to the minister, the meeting with Prabowo was also attended by the Army Chief of Staff (Kasad) General Maruli Simanjuntak.

President Prabowo, according to Sjafrie, has asked all chiefs of staff in the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to keep an eye on the budget management run by their personnel, ensuring its transparency and accountability.

During the meeting, Sjafrie also reported the country's situation to Prabowo after his overseas tour. "There are no unusual incidents that disturb national stability while Prabowo was away from the country," he said, adding that the situation was safe, secure, and under control.

Sjafrie also reported the progress of the Task Force (Satgas) Kuala, which has been working since January 14, 2026. The task force has started dredging sediment mud in the Aceh Tamiang river channel. The plan is to suction the mud at the estuary into a barge in February 2026. "Then we will store and check the mud's composition to see if any specific attention would be required," he said.

The minister also reported on the work of the bridge task force which is tasked with repairing disrupted routes in post-disaster Sumatra regions. Sjafrie also presented the results of TNI's security operation in Papua, despite sparing the details. "TNI's counterinsurgency operation in Papua has shown increased success," said Sjafrie.
