Pangku Named Tempo's Film of Choice for 2025

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The film Pangku (On Your Lap), Reza Rahadian's directorial debut, was selected as Tempo's 2025 Film of Choice. Tempo announced Pangku as the selected film at the awards ceremony of the 2025 Tempo Film Festival, held at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The jury and Tempo's arts editorial team selected five films for the nominations: Dopamin, Esok Tanpa Ibu, Pangku, Pengempungan di Bukit Duri, and Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan. Among the other films, Reza Rahadian is the only director to make his feature film debut, with Pangku.

Producer Arya Ibrahim expressed his gratitude to the Tempo Film Festival for awarding Pangku as Tempo's 2025 Film of Choice. "I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the jury, cast, and crew. Also, to our inspiration, Ibu Pratiwi Widantini Matulessy, whose birthday is today," he said.

Producer Gita Fara also expressed her appreciation for the other filmmakers who have produced outstanding works nominated for the 2025 Tempo Film of Choice. "We are proud and honored to be among our colleagues. We also commend our director, Reza Rahadian. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of his work to speak the truth," he said.

Reza Rahadian's Hopes Through Pangku

Director Reza Rahadian stated that through Pangku, he hopes that bureaucracy in Indonesia will be made easier for lower-middle class people. "Through Pangku, I hope a policy will be created so that Indonesian children will not have to struggle with bureaucracy in school," he said.

At the 2025 Tempo Film Festival, Pangku won four out of nine categories: Choice Film, Choice Lead Actress (Claresta Taufan), Choice Supporting Actress (Christine Hakim), and Choice Director (Reza Rahadian).

In Pangku, Reza explores the phenomenon of "kopi pangku," a coffee drink that has been a tradition on the North Coast Route (Pantura) for years. Regarding perspective, the 38-year-old actor chose the character of a single mother named Sartika (Claresta Taufan) to carry the journey and narrative presented in the film.

The film also presents a social reflection on the position of women everywhere, even globally. For example, Christine Hakim, who plays Maya, has a complex character who, despite her limitations, still "carries" Sartika. Their relationship is depicted as complex, full of dependency, yet still human.

In this film, Reza strives to have a reflective impact on the audience regarding relevant social conditions today. It also explores the struggle of women to survive in spaces with almost no options amidst the abyss of structural poverty.
