TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, Affan Kurniawan (21 years old), passed away after being run over by a tactical vehicle from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) when he tried to pick up his dropped cellphone. The incident occurred as the police were dispersing a protest on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the area of the Bendungan Hilir II flats, Central Jakarta.
According to Rapid Response Unit (URC) Bergerak of the online motorcycle taxi community's Public Relations Officer, Erna, based on witnesses at the scene, Affan fell when he tried to retrieve his phone that had fallen in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, he fell in the middle of the road after being grazed by the commotion of the crowd. "He was in the middle of the road, and his phone fell. When he tried to pick up the phone, he got hit, and the car immediately came and ran over him," said Erna at the funeral home on Jl Lasem, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Erna explained that Affan tried to get up when the car hit him. However, the Brimob tactical vehicle 'barracuda' reversed briefly before speeding away from the scene. "Maybe about a foot away, it immediately reversed because the crowd was already in chaos, and then it sped away."
Erna said the crowd immediately chased the Brimob car to the Kasablanka flyover. At the same time, Affan was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was brought into the emergency room, but his life could not be saved. "He was still alive when he arrived at the emergency room. Five minutes later, his pulse was gone," she said.
Shortly after, Affan was moved to the morgue. She mentioned injuries visible on his face, covered in blood. However, as Affan's body was run over, it is estimated that his internal organs suffered fatal damage. "Clearly, his internal organs must have been damaged," she said.
Erna confirmed that the person in the video circulating on social media was indeed Affan Kurniawan. The recording showed the victim sprawled on the road shortly after being run over. "Yes, that's Affan, run over on the road," she said.
Affan was pronounced dead around 7:50 PM. Erna, who accompanied the body to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, further confirmed in the morgue whether the victim was indeed Affan. After that, Erna continued, she immediately informed her network friends that Affan had passed away.
