TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The technology company Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, is planning to build a mega satellite constellation. This move by Blue Origin comes amidst intense competition in the race to deploy internet satellite constellations, both from the West and from Chinese companies.

The Washington-based aerospace firm recently announced plans to develop a network called TeraWave, which will consist of 5,280 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and 128 satellites in medium Earth orbit (MEO).

“This network will serve tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations,” Blue Origin said in a statement quoted by Space.

According to the announcement, TeraWave is aimed at large businesses and government agencies that require high-speed communications and extensive data-processing capabilities.

Blue Origin said the LEO satellites will deliver speeds of up to 144 gigabits per second using radio-frequency links. The MEO satellites will offer even higher performance, using laser technology to provide speeds of up to 6 terabits per second.

“TeraWave addresses unmet customer needs for higher throughput, symmetrical upload and download speeds, greater redundancy, and rapid scalability,” the company said. “It allows customers to adjust throughput and physical presence as their needs evolve.”

Blue Origin plans to begin building the constellation in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Several other mega satellite constellations are already under development. SpaceX’s Starlink, for example, is serving customers worldwide with a network of more than 9,500 satellites, a number that continues to grow.

Two mega constellations from China-Guowang ("National Network") and Qianfan ("Thousand Screens")-are also being built in low Earth orbit (LEO). Both will eventually consist of more than 13,000 satellites, if all goes according to plan.

On the other hand, Amazon, founded by Bezos in 1994, is building a network of 3,200 LEO satellites called Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper. Like Starlink, Amazon Leo is more aimed at everyday household users.
